설립부터 안정화, 그리고 아름다운 세대 이양까지 20년의 눈부신 역사를 기록합니다.
1. 창립의 현실적 배경과 첫걸음
여성회의 시작은 단순한 친목 도모를 넘어, 낯선 환경에 놓인 이민 여성들이 꿈을 잃지 않고 사회의 일원으로 굳건히 설 수 있도록 돕는 실질적이고 구체적인 비전에서 출발했습니다.
2004년, 노신옥 님은 이민 여성들에게 꿈과 희망을 줄 수 있는 단단한 공동체의 필요성을 깊이 절감하고, 이 비전을 현실로 만들기 위해 주변 동포 여성들에게 진심 어린 뜻을 전하며 동참을 권유하기 시작했습니다. 이 숭고한 뜻에 최한성 님이 적극적으로 공감하고 협력하면서 창립의 결정적인 동력이 마련되었습니다.
지혜로운 리더십의 추대와 공식 출범
2005년 2월 5일, 에드먼턴 한인 여성회가 정식으로 창립되었습니다. 단체의 안정적인 출발과 동포 사회 내에서의 성공적인 정착을 위해, 초대 회장으로는 연장자이자 깊은 덕망을 갖춘 최한성 님이 추대 방식으로 선출되었습니다. 이는 조직의 기틀을 다지기 위한 매우 현실적이고 현명한 결정이었습니다. 이후 같은 해 2005년 10월 17일, 회칙과 조직 기반을 완벽히 갖추고 주정부 비영리 단체로 공식 등록되며 역사의 본격적인 닻을 올렸습니다.
에드먼턴 한인 여성회는 특정 개인의 봉사에 머물지 않고, 창립자의 주도적 헌신을 바탕으로 설립되어 눈부신 성장을 이루고, 마침내 안정화 단계를 거쳐 완전한 세대 이양까지 성공적으로 마친 모범적인 이민 여성 조직으로 평가받고 있습니다.

2. 헌신과 도약의 시대별 기록
초대부터 11대에 이르기까지, 모든 회장님과 임원진의 땀방울이 모여 오늘의 여성회를 만들었습니다. 각 시대를 열어보면 리더들의 훌륭한 업적과 눈부신 발자취를 확인하실 수 있습니다.
여성회의 첫 출발을 이끈 시기로, 조직의 뼈대를 튼튼히 세우는 데 집중하였습니다. 회칙을 제정하고 2005년 10월 비영리 단체 등록을 완료하여 공식적인 기반을 마련하였습니다. 한인회관 건축 모금과 바자회 등 지역 봉사를 시작으로, 주류 사회의 보일 스트리트 불우이웃 점심 봉사의 첫 문을 열며 카지노 펀드 신청의 토대를 다졌습니다. 단체는 자체 기부금과 모금만으로 초기 운영의 기틀을 성공적으로 다졌습니다.
여성회가 조직의 내실을 다지고 외부로 폭발적으로 도약한 중흥기입니다. 단체를 기획하고 창립했던 노신옥 회장님은 무려 회장 4회, 이사장 4회를 역임하며 전면의 리더로서, 때로는 후방의 든든한 지원자이자 자문역으로서 여성회의 모든 성장을 견인했습니다.
- ✓ 운영 체계 및 주류사회 기부 기틀 마련: 주기적인 여성회 회원 워크숍을 시작하여 조직의 내실을 다지고, 카지노 기금 승인 및 무보수 자원봉사 체계를 확립하고, 주류 사회(머스터드 씨드 등)에 대한 지속적인 기부와 공공사업의 확고한 기틀을 다졌습니다.
- ✓ 타민족 연대 및 교류 확대: 다국적 교민회와의 합동 봉사 활동을 추진하였으며, 특히 베트남 교민회와 캐나다 데이(Canada Day) 합동 봉사를 이끌며 다문화 연대의 훌륭한 모범을 보였습니다.
- ✓ 현장 중심의 헌신: 회장 및 이사장으로서 단체를 이끄는 동시에, 남편과 함께 10년간 매주 화요일마다 콥스(Cobs) 빵을 픽업하여 머스터드 씨드(Mustard Seed), 동포 노인, 독신모들에게 직접 배분하는 등 현장 밀착형 봉사에도 변함없는 구슬땀을 흘렸습니다.
- ✓ 차세대 육성 및 전국적 리더십: 차세대 여성 지도자 장학금(Female leader of next generation scholarship)을 신설하고 전국 단위 여성회 설립을 지원했습니다. 나아가 캐나다 한인 여성 총연합회를 창립하고 초대(1대) 및 2대 회장을 역임하며, 제1회 총련 지도자 포럼 및 만남의 광장을 주최하는 등 캐나다 전역을 아우르는 뛰어난 리더십을 발휘했습니다.
- ✓ 국제적 성과: 창립 10주년을 맞아 인신매매 위험에 처한 탈북 여성 2명 구출 및 안전 이주라는 놀라운 인도주의적 성과를 달성했습니다.
근검절약과 봉사 정신을 정착시킨 이기의 회장님은 사진 교실, 그림 교실을 개설하여 동포들의 문화 생활을 풍성하게 하였습니다. 특히 고전춤 팀을 창단하여 한인회 헤리티지 축제, 다문화 행사, 에드먼턴 시청 등 주류 무대에서 훌륭한 공연을 선보이며 한국의 아름다움을 널리 알렸습니다. 또한 연방정부 뉴 호라이즌 기금 수주로 단체의 지평을 크게 넓혔습니다.
부드럽고 매끄러운 리더십의 조희양 회장님은 어린이 합창단 등 문화·교육 프로그램을 풍성하게 꽃피웠습니다. 전국 한인여성 총연합회 워크숍을 성공적으로 개최하며 타 도시와의 교류를 통해 단체의 위상을 한 차원 높였습니다.
전례 없는 코로나19 위기 속에서 우명순 회장님의 리더십은 더욱 빛났습니다. 엄한 제약 속에서도 카지노 행사를 무사히 치루고, 팬데믹 위기 속에서는 마스크와 식품권을 발 빠르게 지원하며 임원들과 함께 영하의 길거리에서 구호품을 나누는 숭고한 헌신을 보여주셨습니다. 또한 남편과 함께 5년 동안 매주 화요일마다 콥스(Cobs) 빵을 픽업하여 머스터드 씨드에 전달하는 등 보이지 않는 곳에서도 꾸준한 이웃 사랑을 실천하였습니다.
지속적인 기부 활동과 온라인 강의를 진행하며 사회의 단절된 일상에 소통의 온기를 불어넣었습니다. 이기의 회장님은 앞서 노신옥 회장님과 함께 무려 4번의 부회장으로 봉사하며, 여성회장배 골프대회, 노인회 추석 잔치, 동포 독거노인 점심 봉사 등 굵직한 행사마다 가장 많은 음식을 직접 만들고 궂은일을 도맡아 온 노신옥 회장님의 '든든한 오른팔'이자 여성회 최고의 헌신적 봉사자입니다. 여성회 초창기의 진정한 봉사 정신을 굳건히 이어받아 후배들에게 전달하고자 끊임없이 노력하셨으며, 현재(제11대)에도 이사장으로 든든하게 단체를 지키고 계십니다.
창립부터 단체를 이끌어 온 원로 지도자들이 후배들을 위해 명예롭게 이선으로 물러나며, 40대 이하의 젊고 유능한 임원진으로 가장 이상적인 세대교체를 이루어냈습니다. 탁월한 감각의 한보라 회장님은 아트 테라피(Art Therapy)와 가족 그림반 등 현대인들의 마음을 어루만지는 트렌디한 프로그램을 도입하여 조직에 젊은 활력을 불어넣고 있습니다. 창립 20주년을 맞아 볼리비아 소녀들을 위해 생리용품 지원금($5,000)을 쾌척하며, 선배들이 닦아놓은 나눔의 정신을 국경을 넘어 미래로 아름답게 계승하고 있습니다.

Official Historical Record (2005 - Present)
English translation of the Edmonton Korean Canadian Women's Association 20-year history.
1. Founding Background & Practical Vision
In 2004, Shinock Han initiated the concept of a practical community to provide immigrant women with solid support to realize their dreams in a foreign land. Through her sincere encouragement and sharing of this vision, Han-sung Choi deeply agreed and collaborated, creating the momentum for the organization.
The association was officially founded on February 5, 2005. To ensure a stable start and successful settlement, Han-sung Choi, a respected elder in the community, was appointed as the 1st President—a very wise and practical decision. By October 17, 2005, it was officially registered as a provincial non-profit organization. The association is recognized as an exemplary group that progressed from the founder's dedication to significant growth, stabilization, and a complete generational transition.
2. Leadership Eras & Milestones (1st - 11th Terms)
1st Term: Wise Leadership & Solid Foundation
President: Han-sung Choi. Her respected leadership successfully laid the structural framework, registering the non-profit in 2005, and setting the association's charitable direction through initiatives like the Boyle Street lunch service.
2nd-5th Terms: Dedication & Explosive Growth
President: Shinock Han. Serving an incredible 4 terms as President and 4 terms as Board Chair, she drove the association's growth. She initiated periodic workshops for members to strengthen organizational bonds. She secured Casino funds, established a solid foundation for mainstream society donations, and created the Female leader of next generation scholarship. She expanded multicultural solidarity through joint volunteer activities with other national communities, notably partnering with the Vietnamese community for Canada Day. Furthermore, she demonstrated national leadership as the Founding 1st and 2nd President of the Confederation of Korean Canadian Women's Associations, successfully hosting the 1st Confederation Leader's Forum and Gathering Square. Internationally, she remarkably rescued two North Korean defector women. Alongside her leadership roles, she and her husband dedicated 10 years to personally picking up Cobs Bread every Tuesday and distributing it to the Mustard Seed, seniors, and single mothers.
6th-9th Terms: Solidarity, Culture & Crisis Overcome
6th Term President: Ki-eui Lee. Established photography and painting classes. Notably, she founded a traditional Korean dance team that performed at the Heritage Festival, multicultural events, and City Hall, promoting Korean beauty. Secured the New Horizons grant.
7th Term President: Hee-yang Cho. Expanded cultural programs like the children's choir and successfully hosted the national workshop, elevating the association's status through inter-city exchanges.
8th Term President: Myung-soon Woo. Demonstrated exceptional leadership during COVID-19. Successfully managed the Casino event under strict pandemic restrictions, quickly provided masks and food vouchers, and showed noble dedication by distributing relief goods on freezing streets alongside executives. Additionally, she and her husband devoted 5 years to picking up Cobs Bread every Tuesday and delivering it to the Mustard Seed, demonstrating unwavering grassroots service.
9th Term President: Ki-eui Lee. Combated the prolonged pandemic with continuous donations and online classes, bringing warmth to a disconnected society. Having served as Vice President four times alongside President Shinock Han, she was the ultimate "right-hand" volunteer, personally cooking for major events like Golf Tournaments and Seniors' Chuseok Parties. She strives to pass down the founding spirit and continues her unwavering service as the current (11th) Board Chair.
10th-11th Terms: Successful Generational Shift
President: Bora Han (Current). With senior leaders stepping back to support from behind, a younger executive team under President Han introduced modern programs like Art Therapy and continued the global legacy by donating $5,000 for girls in Bolivia.
3. Remarks
The dedication shown by every president and executive member has become the great foundation of the Edmonton community. From the founder's vision to the honorable generational shift, ordinary women gathering together can realize brilliant dreams and create a happier future.
